ASEAN NCAP launches IVASA programme to assess ADAS performance

The New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) has introduced a new programme that evaluates advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), expanding its range of vehicle safety assessments.
Analysing ADAS
ASEAN NCAP has launched a new testing programme called the Intelligent Vehicle Advanced Safety Assessment (IVASA). The programme has been designed to evaluate ADAS and Intelligent Driving Systems (IDS) in new vehicles under real-world driving conditions.
According to ASEAN NCAP's official statement, the development of IVASA was "built upon the principle of balancing driving safety with user experience". The core of IVASA's testing is based on the "operational performance, system reliability, and risk management capabilities of intelligent driving technologies".
IVASA will be applied specifically to vehicles equipped with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 2 automated driving systems. The programme will assess a vehicle's ADAS or IDS based on the following criteria:
- "how effectively intelligent driving systems respond to traffic situations"
- "how they maintain operational stability, support driver engagement"
- "how the systems contribute to overall road safety"
ASEAN NCAP has opened the programme to automakers interested in developing intelligent vehicle safety systems and related innovations.
"IVASA offers Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) an opportunity to demonstrate the performance of the intelligent driving systems equipped in their models," the organisation stated on its website.
The organisation intends for IVASA to function as a regional assessment framework, allowing vehicle manufacturers to evaluate their technology under the real-world driving conditions of Southeast Asia. These systems will encounter common traffic conditions in the region, including "mixed traffic conditions, high motorcycle density, diverse infrastructure quality, and tropical weather environments".
Launch and results
ASEAN NCAP will release the first IVASA results in October this year. The report will provide information on the current state of intelligent driving technologies in Southeast Asia's vehicle market. The organisation stated that it intends to expand its assessment of evolving vehicle technologies through IVASA, extending its scope beyond "conventional vehicle safety ratings".
