Chinese carmakers BYD and Changan are expanding operations in Thailand.
In 2024, China accounted for THB 174.6 billion (US$5.13 billion) in foreign direct investment (FDI) applications to Thailand, a 10% increase compared to the previous year.
These firms are expanding particularly in eastern Thailand, especially in Rayong Province and Chon Buri, both part of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
BYD launched its first EV factory in Southeast Asia, located in Thailand, in July 2024, further strengthening its presence in the country.
The company now holds a 41% market share in Thailand's new energy vehicle sector.
At the 2024 Thailand International Auto Show, BYD recorded 7,042 vehicle bookings, second behind Toyota.
In 2024, 40,000 work permits were issued to Chinese nationals in Thailand, reflecting the growing influence of Chinese companies amid rising investments and trade.
