Ford has provided a further update on its plans to establish local vehicle production in Indonesia, moving beyond the earlier feasibility discussions disclosed in May 2026.
While the company had previously confirmed that it was studying the possibility of completely knocked-down (CKD) assembly operations and evaluating potential manufacturing arrangements, the latest update reflects a more advanced stage of planning, including a tentative production timeline, investment estimates and a potential location under consideration.
Ford is finalising its plans to commence vehicle production in Indonesia as part of its strategy to expand its operations in the domestic market.
The local distributor of Ford, RMA Indonesia's Regional Director Roelof Lamberts stated that the company is continuing to expand its investment in Indonesia, including exploring the development of a vehicle assembly facility.
According to him, Ford is engaging with various stakeholders, including government authorities and manufacturing facility owners in Indonesia, to prepare for the potential local production of Ford models in the future.
"We continue to discuss with various stakeholders, including the Indonesian government and those with assembly facilities in Indonesia, to prepare for the possibility of local assembly for future Ford models," Roelof said, as quoted on July 16th.
He stated that Ford considers the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment to have potential in the Indonesian market. He added that the 4x4 pickup truck segment could also support future business growth, given demand from the plantation, mining and oil and gas sectors.
"The 4x4 pickup segment itself is quite large in Indonesia, and we have products that are suitable for that market," he said.
At present, Ford's entire vehicle line-up in Indonesia is imported in completely built-up (CBU) form from Thailand. Models currently sold in the country include the Ford Ranger series, Everest series and Mustang.
Ford is targeting the commencement of local vehicle assembly operations in 2028. Investment in the construction of the assembly facility is estimated at IDR 76 billion (US$ 4.2 million), while the expansion of the dealer network is projected to require an additional investment of approximately IDR 25 billion.
The company had previously indicated that West Java is among the locations being considered for the proposed assembly facility. However, Roelof emphasised that several stages of planning and preparation must still be completed before the project can be realised.
"There are still many details to be finalised. However, for now, the target date is still around 2028. That's what I hope," he concluded.
