Freelander set to enter local market in 2027

Chery Group is preparing to introduce the Freelander brand, developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), in Indonesia in 2027.
The company has yet to confirm an exact launch date or pricing, as several preparations remain to be completed and factors affecting the vehicle's final selling price must be assessed.
"We can't provide the exact time yet, but we will try to bring it to Indonesia next year," said Zeng Shuo, President Director of Chery Group, in Wuhu, China, on October 19th, 2026.
Zeng said the company would begin preparations for the brand's entry into Indonesia in 2027. Several steps must be completed before Freelander vehicles can be officially marketed in the country.
Pricing has yet to be determined, with taxes and the vehicle supply strategy among the factors requiring consideration. The choice between importing completely built-up (CBU) vehicles and manufacturing them in Indonesia is also expected to affect the final selling price.
"The CBU scheme, or production in Indonesia, also affects the price, so we can't announce the price yet," Zeng said.
Freelander is being developed as a separate brand focused on electrified sport utility vehicles (SUVs), combining British design characteristics with Chinese technology. The brand is expected to be reintroduced in 2026 and will operate separately from the Chery and Land Rover product lines within the broader Chery Group.
The brand's first model is the Freelander 8, an SUV being developed with different electrification options, including a fully electric powertrain and range-extender technology. The vehicle is manufactured in China through the Chery-JLR joint venture.
Although Chery Group has confirmed its intention to introduce Freelander in Indonesia, it has yet to disclose the model's pricing or finalise a plan for supplying vehicles to the Indonesian market. The launch schedule and pricing will depend on the completion of the necessary preparations and decisions regarding taxes and vehicle import or domestic production arrangements.
