Following the earlier introduction of the GWM Tank 300 diesel, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) equipped with a 2.4T diesel engine, GWM Thailand is preparing to launch a larger variant - the new GWM Tank 500 diesel 2.4T. The launch is scheduled for July 2025.
Prior to the official release and pricing announcement, GWM Thailand has disclosed the specifications and available variants. The Tank 500 diesel 2.4T will be offered in three versions:
- Tank 500 diesel 2.4T Pro
- Tank 500 diesel 2.4T Ultra
- Tank 500 diesel 2.4T Ultra 4WD
The Ultra and Ultra 4WD variants will be available in a colour called Black Warrior.
In terms of exterior design, the Tank 500 diesel 2.4T shares several elements with the Tank 500 HEV. The front includes a large grille, horizontal air vents, and the Tank emblem aligned with raised bonnet lines. The vehicle is fitted with LED headlamps that include automatic on-off operation, auto high-low beam adjustment, follow-me-home lighting, daytime running lights, and LED fog lamps.
The side profile features a straight body line. The Pro variant includes 18-inch black alloy wheels with 265/60 R18 Westlake tyres and a spare. The Ultra and Ultra 4WD variants have 20-inch black alloy wheels with 265/50 R20 Continental tyres and a spare.
At the rear, a horizontally opening tailgate includes an electric suction system. The spare tyre, which was previously mounted externally, has been repositioned underneath the vehicle to allow better access in tight spaces.
The vertical LED taillights remain unchanged, and the rear includes a third brake light and LED fog lamps. Additional equipment includes an electrically operated panoramic sunroof, roof rails, a shark fin antenna, and a rear spoiler.
The electric side steps used previously have been replaced with fixed units.
In terms of dimensions, the Tank 500 diesel 2.4T has a length of 4,886 mm, which is 192 mm shorter than the HEV version. Width is 1,934 mm, height is 1,905 mm, and the wheelbase measures 2,850 mm. Ground clearance is 224 mm. The vehicle weighs between 2,585 kg and 2,635 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 78 litres - 3 litres more than the HEV version.
Interior materials include Nappa leather. The dashboard features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Smart Dual Screen Interaction. A head-up display is also included.
The Ultra and Ultra 4WD variants provide 8-way electrically adjustable front seats with seat massage, welcome entry features, and a VIP switch. Both rows in these variants also include seat ventilation. Across all variants, the second-row seats use foam padding aimed at improving comfort over longer distances.
The cabin offers a wheelbase of 2,850 mm and luggage capacity of 795 litres.
Additional features include dual-zone front air conditioning, rear air vents, an N95 air filtration and ioniser system, a 50W wireless charging pad, and multi-colour ambient lighting.
Audio equipment includes 12 speakers in the Ultra variants and eight speakers in the Pro. Double-layer laminated glass and an Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system are fitted.
A 540-degree camera system, combining 360-degree and underbody views, is included. The vehicle can be controlled remotely via the GWM app and supports voice commands.
Driver assistance systems are based on L2+ technology and include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Change Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, and Intelligent Cruise Assist with Traffic Jam Assist. Other systems include Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB), a 540-degree camera, and 12 proximity sensors.
The vehicle's body structure is a cage-type frame made of high-tensile steel, designed to withstand compression, collision, and torsional forces. It has a rated roof pressure resistance of 96.58 kilonewtons and a maximum torsional capacity of 23,076 Nm. An automatic door unlocking function is included in the event of a collision.
The Tank 500 diesel 2.4T is powered by a 2.4-litre diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) and a 2,000-bar high-pressure fuel injector. It produces 184 PS and 480 Nm of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) management. Reported engine noise at idle is below 68 decibels.
The Pro and Ultra variants offer three drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Economy. The Ultra 4WD variant includes eight drive modes: 2H, 4H, 4L, Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, and Expert Mode. Additional functions include Tank Turn, Off-road Cruise Control, and front and rear differential locks.
Three automatic parking systems are available on the Ultra and Ultra 4WD variants.
The model is offered in white, black, and grey. The Black Warrior edition, available exclusively for the Ultra and Ultra 4WD variants, features black exterior accents, black alloy wheels, and a black interior.
