Honda Prospect Motor halts City hatchback production in Indonesia
Kompas Otomotif, 4 Mar '26
Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) has officially ceased production of the Honda City Hatchback in Indonesia and confirmed that there will be no Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) issued for the 2026 production year.
HPM's Sales, Marketing and After-Sales Director, Yusak Billy, stated that the decision was taken in response to weakening demand in the national hatchback segment in recent years.
"We've stopped production of the City Hatchback, but sales are still ongoing due to low demand for hatchbacks. However, if you are looking for one, it is still available at dealerships," Billy said in Jakarta on March 3rd, 2026.
"It stopped some time ago," he further added.
This indicates that while the production line has been halted, vehicles remain available within the dealer network while stocks last. Billy emphasised that this step does not necessarily mean the model has been permanently discontinued. Evaluations will continue, taking market developments into consideration.
"Once again, let's not talk about total discontinuation. We will see how the market develops, and that will determine whether we need it or not. If the market needs it, if it is necessary, if it is desirable, why not?" he said.
When asked about the 2026 VIN, Billy responded briefly that the company is no longer carrying out production activities for the model. "It's gone," he said.
Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the last City Hatchback was produced in March 2025, at the end of the first quarter of 2025.
Meanwhile, distribution from the factory to dealers (wholesale) was last recorded in July 2025.
The City Hatchback has historically been marketed in the compact hatchback segment. In recent years, the hatchback market has contracted as consumer preferences have shifted towards compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) models. With no 2026 VIN planned and production having ceased, the model's future will depend on market developments.
