German chipmaker Infineon Technologies opened a new backend manufacturing facility in Thailand on Octobre 1st, investing more than EUR 100 million (US$ 113.57 million), as the country seeks to expand its semiconductor footprint amid increasing regional competition, a local daily reported.
Located near Bangkok, the new site handles the processing of chips into finished and tested semiconductors. It features an initial 30,000 square metres of cleanroom space, which can be expanded to 150,000 square metres to support long-term regional demand.
"It is a strategic long-term investment. We are well prepared for strong future growth," said Alexander Gorski, Chief Operations Officer at Infineon Technologies, highlighting Thailand's strategic proximity to key Asian markets such as China, according to the report.
Gorski noted that Infineon operates 13 global manufacturing sites across the US, Europe, China and South-East Asia. The company's existing cleanroom capacity can support a doubling of its revenue while providing dual-sourcing options across regional plants.
"If something is going wrong in the factory in Malaysia, we can support our customers through the factory in Thailand," Gorski added during the briefing, according to the report.
Thailand aims to attract US$ 18 billion in semiconductor investments by 2030, targeting photonics, power electronics and sensors to establish a resilient domestic ecosystem, according to Board of Investment Secretary-General Narit Therdsteerasukdi.
Between 2023 and July 2026, Thailand secured THB 910 billion (US$ 27.12 billion) in semiconductor and advanced electronics investments. The government is also supporting initiatives to train nearly 85,000 skilled workers and 1,700 researchers by 2030.
