KG Mobility (KGM) has entered the Myanmar automotive market with the launch of its brand in Yangon, introducing the Torres EVX electric SUV and Musso EV electric pickup as its initial models.
The South Korean automaker is partnering with Myanmar's Super Seven Stars Group (SSS Group) to supply 1,000 vehicles to the market this year and establish local production.
KGM held its brand launch event in Yangon on August 14th, attended by around 500 people, including KGM Chairman Gwak Jae-seon, KGM President Gwak Jeong-hyun, SSS Group Chairman San Linn, SSS Group Automotive Head and President Salman Linn, officials, local media and customers.
Established in the early 2000s, SSS Group is Myanmar's first private automotive company and the country's largest private automotive group, with businesses spanning new and used vehicle sales, EV charging infrastructure, food, logistics and agriculture.
Under the partnership, KGM will supply key vehicle components to SSS Group for knock-down (KD) assembly, with the local company assembling the vehicles at a newly established plant and selling them in Myanmar. Initial local production and sales will focus on the Torres EVX and Musso EV.
The selection of an electric SUV and an electric pickup reflects local market requirements. Myanmar's automotive industry remains at an early stage of development, while limited road infrastructure and demand for vehicles for family transportation and personal business use support demand for SUVs and pickups. Customers also place importance on design, practicality and durability.
KGM Chairman Gwak Jae-seon said Myanmar is a developing automotive market where road conditions, family transportation and business requirements influence vehicle purchasing decisions. He said these requirements are consistent with KGM's focus on SUVs and pickup trucks and added that the company would work with SSS Group to expand in Myanmar and establish a brand that customers can choose and trust.
SSS Group's existing sales network and EV charging infrastructure business are expected to support KGM's entry into the EV market. As Myanmar's charging infrastructure remains at an early stage, the partner's experience in developing and operating charging facilities will form part of the collaboration.
Expansion of overseas KD operations
The Myanmar programme forms part of KGM's strategy to expand overseas KD assembly operations. Following its entry into Myanmar, the company plans to expand KD operations into other markets, including Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, to increase its overseas sales and production base.
As of July 2026, KGM had exported a cumulative 40,894 vehicles. Export volumes have increased compared with the previous year, when the company recorded its highest annual export volume in 11 years. KGM plans to use its KD strategy to increase overseas sales.
Through the Myanmar partnership, KGM plans to establish a local manufacturing and sales base while supplying the Torres EVX and Musso EV. The company plans to supply 1,000 electric and other environmentally friendly vehicles to Myanmar during 2026 as it develops the market and expands its overseas KD operations.
