South Korean automaker KG Mobility will collaborate with Kakao to launch a new model in 2026.
According to industry sources on 30th November, KG Mobility intends to integrate the Kakao platform into a new midsize to large plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) during the second half of 2026.
The model will succeed the Rexton. The two companies are reportedly engaged in detailed discussions regarding the inclusion of a Kakao-based convenience platform and entertainment features in the vehicle.
This collaboration represents KG Mobility's first partnership with Kakao on an in-vehicle platform. The automaker has previously relied on Naver for functions such as voice commands and employed a combination of navigation platforms, including Gini Map. This approach often resulted in compatibility issues for drivers.
KG Mobility plans to adopt Kakao as its primary platform to enhance usability and establish a foundation for software-defined vehicles.
The company is also preparing a complete redesign of the Musso Sports pickup truck, scheduled for the first half of next year. A petrol version will be added alongside the current diesel and electric powertrains.
A company official stated that KG Mobility is strengthening its powertrain line-up to remain competitive and intends to continue introducing new models with environmentally friendly systems through 2030.
The automaker aims to increase operating profit by combining upgraded IT platforms with enhanced powertrain options while mitigating the impact of sluggish domestic demand.
KG Mobility joined the KG Group in November 2022. Within one year, it achieved an operating profit of KRW 12.5 billion (US$ 8.5 million), ending a prolonged period of losses and recording its first annual profit since 2007, when it operated as Ssangyong Motor.
For the period from January to September this year, operating profit reached KRW 31.5 billion.
