Mazda Philippines has confirmed that plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models will be added to the brand's electrified vehicle line-up by 2027.
The announcement was made during the launch of the 2027 CX-5.
Speaking to the media, Mazda Philippines President and CEO Steven Tan said the addition of PHEV models forms part of Mazda's multi-solution strategy, which involves deploying different powertrain technologies according to market requirements.
Tan said the development of electrified vehicle adoption in markets such as the Philippines has led Mazda to introduce plug-in hybrids alongside its existing M Hybrid models.
Mazda has not confirmed which PHEV models it plans to introduce. Potential candidates include the CX-60 PHEV, CX-80 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV.
All three models use the same 2.5-litre PHEV powertrain, combining a 195 PS, 261 Nm 2.5-litre direct-injection Skyactiv-G engine with a 177 PS electric motor to produce a combined 331 PS and 500 Nm of torque. A 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery provides an electric-only range of around 62 kilometres under the WLTP standard.
Like other models in Mazda's Large Product Group, the PHEV powertrain uses a multi-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission to manage power delivery between the combustion engine and electric motor under different driving conditions.
The CX-80 is one potential candidate for the Philippine market. Its three-row configuration makes it suitable for buyers requiring additional seating, while its driving characteristics would distinguish it from the CX-90.
If Mazda Philippines continues its existing approach of offering higher-specification versions, the CX-80 PHEV could be positioned in a similar price range to the CX-90, which currently costs around PHP 3.8 million to PHP 3.9 million (US$ 61,555-63,175).
Mazda could also revise its CX-90 line-up by discontinuing the entry-level eight-seat variant and positioning the six-seat 3.3-litre M Hybrid inline-six model as the range's entry point. A CX-90 PHEV could then be positioned above it at a higher price point.
For the CX-60, Mazda Philippines could initially continue offering the model with its 3.3-litre inline-six engine while making the 2.5-litre PHEV available through indent orders for customers specifically seeking the plug-in hybrid powertrain.
