Amid the shift towards vehicle electrification across Southeast Asia, the automotive industry in Indonesia is preparing for the entry of hybrid models from Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia (MMKSI).
The Indonesian distributor of Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed plans to enter the hybrid car segment by 2026, formally outlining its strategy following earlier speculation regarding the introduction of a new hybrid model.
In addition to importing completely built-up units, MMKSI is preparing a local production scheme to support pricing in the domestic market. MMKSI President Director Atsushi Kurita stated that the company is currently preparing facilities and production lines as the initial stage of the project's implementation.
"We are currently preparing for production. The first six months of 2026 will focus on local production, followed by the next six months for launch and marketing," he said.
Based on the timeline, the first public appearance of the Mitsubishi hybrid model is likely to take place at the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The annual automotive exhibition is one of the country's industry events where new models are often introduced.
Although the official launch schedule has not yet been announced, it may occur in the second half of fiscal 2026. Based on previous launch patterns, GIIAS is a possible venue for the debut of the new model.
One product widely rumoured to be produced domestically is the Xpander Hybrid. The model, previously launched in Thailand, features Mitsubishi's e:Motion technology, which combines a petrol engine and an electric motor.
The Xpander Hybrid is equipped with seven driving modes that can be adjusted to suit road conditions, along with Active Yaw Control (AYC), which is designed to assist stability during manoeuvres.
If produced locally, the Xpander Hybrid would enter the electrified MPV segment in Indonesia.
Domestic production would allow Mitsubishi to determine pricing locally. This could position the model within the MPV segment for consumers seeking fuel efficiency and comfort.
