Proton to begin production of AMA02 SUV in Q3 2026

Amid ongoing developments in its domestic automotive sector, Proton is preparing to expand its product portfolio with a new model in Malaysia, with production of the AMA02 based on its Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026.
The timeline is indicated by supplier developments, including a contract secured by Feytech for the supply of leather seat covers. The agreement spans 84 months (seven years) and is valued at MYR 96.8 billion (US$ 24.4 billion). The AMA02 is expected to take the form of a compact SUV positioned in the A-segment.
It is likely to compete with models such as the Perodua Ativa and the Honda WR-V. The model is anticipated to be marketed under the Saga Cross nameplate, representing an expansion of the Saga line-up beyond its existing sedan offering.
The introduction of the AMA02 will extend Proton's SUV portfolio into a lower price segment. To manage costs, the model is expected to utilise the same powertrain as the Saga sedan, comprising a 1.5-litre BHE15PFI naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 120 PS and 150 Nm, paired with an Aisin four-speed automatic transmission.
A hybrid variant is also expected, aligned with broader electrification strategies within the group. This system is likely to share components with the powertrain used in the Proton eMas 7 PHEV, including an electric motor and a single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The hybrid configuration is expected to use a smaller battery than the plug-in hybrid system, removing the requirement for external charging.
The AMA02 is likely to adopt the DHT120 variant of the hybrid system, with the designation indicating an electric motor output of 120 kW (163 PS). Proton has previously stated that hybrid components will be assembled locally, supporting integration of this system into the new model.
Earlier supplier activity also indicated the planned production timeline. MCE Holdings confirmed that it would supply automotive electronics and mechatronic components for a new model, with a stated production window between August and October, alongside an identical 84-month contract duration. This timeline aligns with the planned start of AMA02 production in the third quarter of 2026.
