The factory-backed company responsible for importing and converting Ram Trucks to right-hand-drive in Australia has recalled 437 examples of the Ram 1500 'DS', due to a manufacturing defect which could lead to fuel pump failure.

The recall only affects examples of Ram's 'DS'-generation 1500 pick-ups which are powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine - not V8 petrol versions.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: "Due to a manufacturing defect, the High-Pressure Fuel Pump could fail prematurely and introduce failed component debris into the fuel system.

"This could impair the fuel supply to the engine and result in a loss of power whilst driving.

"A loss of power whilst driving could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders."

American Special Vehicles - operating as Ram Trucks Australia - has advised it will contact affected owners in writing when parts become available, requesting they make an appointment at any authorised Ram dealership to have the work carried out free of charge.
