Tesla has established a Vietnamese subsidiary, Tesla Motors Vietnam, according to a filing on the National Business Registration Portal, attracting widespread attention among Vietnamese consumers.
The business registration information, dated 12th September, was widely circulated on social media on the morning of 14th September. According to the filing, the company's office is located in Ho Chi Minh City, while its primary registered business activity is the wholesale of motor cars and other motor vehicles.
Tesla Motors Vietnam has a charter capital of VND 77.7 billion (US$ 3 million) and is registered to operate across seven business sectors. These include the wholesale and retail sale of vehicles, vehicle parts and machinery, as well as other wholesale and retail activities.
The company has three legal representatives: one Vietnamese national and two Americans. David Jon Feinstein, a senior Tesla executive, is listed as president, while Isabel Ching Fan is the general director and Nguyen Manh Hung is assistant to the general director. Feinstein's registered address is 1 Tesla Road in Austin, Texas, which is also the US headquarters of Tesla.
The establishment of a legal entity represents an important step for Tesla as it prepares for a potential official presence in Vietnam. While the registration does not necessarily confirm when Tesla will begin selling vehicles directly in the country, it raises expectations that Vietnamese consumers could eventually gain access to officially distributed Tesla models, along with more comprehensive warranty, servicing and maintenance support.
Tesla's entry would also add another major international EV brand to an increasingly competitive Vietnamese market. Domestic consumers have been presented with a growing range of electric vehicles in recent years, led by Vietnamese manufacturer VinFast.
Expansion across Southeast Asia
Tesla's potential entry into Vietnam comes as the company continues to develop its presence across Southeast Asia, a region that has emerged as an increasingly important market for electric vehicles.
Thailand was the first major Southeast Asian market in which Tesla established an official presence. The company sells key models such as the Model 3 and Model Y there, while it has also displayed the Cybertruck as part of its efforts to raise brand awareness.
In Malaysia, Tesla has obtained an official distribution licence and subsequently developed its local infrastructure, including a network of charging stations and official technical service centres.
Tesla's presence in Singapore and Indonesia has developed differently, with vehicles primarily being sold through private importers. The company has nevertheless been taking steps towards establishing a more official presence in both markets, where it faces strong competition from both domestic and international EV manufacturers.
Tesla's approach across Southeast Asia reflects the differing regulatory environments, infrastructure and market conditions in individual countries. Rather than following a uniform strategy, the company has expanded incrementally, establishing the necessary commercial and service infrastructure according to local requirements.
The establishment of Tesla Motors Vietnam could therefore mark the beginning of another phase in the company's Southeast Asian expansion. For Vietnamese consumers, the prospect of an official Tesla operation also raises expectations of greater access to the brand and improved after-sales support, while potentially adding further momentum to the country's rapidly developing EV market.
