Toyota dominates hybrid market in Indonesia
Kompas Otomotif, 30 Jan '25
Toyota Indonesia has recorded a 35.3% share of the electrified vehicle market in Indonesia in 2024.
This achievement has been driven by strong sales in the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) segment, particularly through the locally produced Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix Hybrid and Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid models.
From January to December 2024, the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix Hybrid sales secured a 46.8% share of the hybrid car market in Indonesia, making it the best-selling electrified vehicle in the country.
Meanwhile, the Yaris Cross Hybrid achieved a market share of 7.27%, establishing itself as one of the most popular hybrid models.
Production of the Innova Zenix Hybrid and Yaris Cross Hybrid commenced in 2022 as part of Toyota's commitment to supporting Indonesia's electrified vehicle programme, in accordance with Presidential Regulation No. 55 of 2019 concerning the acceleration of the battery-based electric motor vehicle programme.
Both models are manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) in Karawang, West Java.
Toyota has been committed to the development of environmentally friendly vehicle technology for over 30 years. The first hybrid vehicle introduced by the company was the Toyota Prius, which became the first mass-market hybrid car upon its launch in 1997.
In Indonesia, the Prius was introduced in 2007, followed by various other hybrid models, including the Alphard Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Corolla Altis Hybrid, and Corolla Cross Hybrid.
As part of its HEV development, Toyota has introduced the fifth-generation hybrid powertrain, featuring a lighter, more compact, and high-powered electric motor, enhancing the efficiency of the hybrid system's electric drive.
This innovation has resulted in improved performance and lower CO₂ emissions, particularly in the 1.8-litre version.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h has also improved, with a reduction of 1.7 seconds, bringing the time down to 9.2 seconds.
Through continuous achievements and technological advancements, Toyota continues to strengthen its position as a pioneer in Indonesia's electrified vehicle industry.
