Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has been asked to increase vehicle exports, expand domestic battery electric vehicle (BEV) production and consider manufacturing double-cab pickup trucks locally.
The Indonesian government is seeking to increase vehicle production and exports and expand the use of the country's battery supply chain.
Industry Minister Muhammad Sarmuji made the remarks during a meeting with TMMIN executives in Jakarta on October 27th, 2026. Discussions covered vehicle production, export targets and industry growth.
"We have asked Toyota to increase vehicle exports from Indonesia, both by expanding its model lineup and the number of destination countries," Sarmuji told reporters after the meeting.
He identified Australia as a potential export market for Indonesian-built vehicles, citing geographical proximity and existing trade agreements. However, he noted that neighbouring countries currently supply a considerable proportion of vehicles to the Australian market. Sarmuji therefore encouraged Toyota to consider manufacturing double-cab pickup trucks locally for export to Australia.
The minister said the government was prepared to review the domestic automotive regulatory framework to support local production of these vehicles. "If improvements to the double-cab vehicle ecosystem are needed, we can also work on that," he said.
Sarmuji also urged Toyota to accelerate its BEV manufacturing plans in Indonesia. He referred to the company's existing hybrid vehicle production and locally established hybrid battery plant, which exports components internationally, and said the government expected further progress towards domestic assembly of fully electric vehicles.
"Why? Because our battery ecosystem is already highly advanced. The government is also paying considerable attention to the battery ecosystem," Sarmuji said.
He noted that TMMIN directly employs approximately 8,000 workers and supports around 360,000 jobs across its supply chain and dealer network.
TMMIN President Director Nandi Julyanto said the company had begun assembling the Toyota bZ4X electric SUV locally and was preparing additional BEV models for the Indonesian market. He said Toyota would continue to adapt its product range to domestic market requirements, including the possibility of introducing a lower-priced electric vehicle.
"We are already producing the bZ4X in Indonesia. We are also preparing to introduce other BEV models in the future that will suit the Indonesian market," Julyanto said.
He added that the company would continue developing products based on consumer requirements. "We will always provide according to consumer needs," he said at the Ministry of Industry's office in Jakarta on October 27th.
Toyota has not disclosed the segment, specifications, price range or launch date of its next BEV. Julyanto indicated that the company was considering models suited to local market conditions and potentially priced below the bZ4X.
"So now we have the bZ4X, and in the future, we'll think about more suitable models. Hopefully, they'll be more affordable," he said.
According to the October 2026 Jakarta on-the-road (OTR) price list, the bZ4X is available in Indonesia in two variants. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) bZ4X Standard is priced from IDR 799 million (US$ 43,990), while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) bZ4X Touring starts at IDR 889 million.
Toyota also sells the Urban Cruiser in Indonesia, with prices ranging from IDR 759 million to IDR 763 million. Unlike the locally assembled bZ4X, the Urban Cruiser is imported from India as a completely built-up (CBU) vehicle. Toyota has not confirmed further details about the potential introduction of another BEV at a lower price.
Julyanto also said Toyota would continue to work towards increasing export volumes, expanding its model lineup and entering additional international markets, in line with the government's request to expand Indonesia's role as a vehicle production and export base.
