Mazda has launched the third-generation (KM) CX-5 in Malaysia, nearly four months after the SUV was previewed at this year's Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS).
Imported from Japan as a completely built-up (CBU) model, the new CX-5 will be sold alongside the second-generation (KF) model, which is locally assembled (CKD). The third-generation CX-5 is available in a single 2.5G High variant, with two configurations: one with a panoramic sunroof and one without. The version without the sunroof is priced at MYR 168,510 (US$ 41,225), while the version with the sunroof costs MYR 171,510.40 on the road, excluding insurance. The latter price is equivalent to approximately US$ 41,900.
Bermaz Motor had initially estimated a price of MYR 170,000 during KLIMS. The version with the sunroof costs MYR 6,550 more than the second-generation 2.5G 2WD High, which is priced at MYR 164,960.40. Without the panoramic sunroof, the price difference between the two generations is MYR 3,550.
Dimensions and exterior design
The third-generation CX-5 measures 4,690 mm in length (+115 mm), 1,860 mm in width (+15 mm) and 1,695 mm in height (+20 mm). Its wheelbase has increased by 115 mm to 2,815 mm, providing additional cabin space. Interior space in the previous generation had been identified as a limitation compared with some competing models.
The new CX-5 is similar in overall dimensions to the Honda CR-V, which measures 4,691 mm in length, 1,866 mm in width and 1,681 mm in height. However, the Mazda has a longer wheelbase of 2,815 mm, compared with 2,701 mm for the Honda. The CX-5 is also larger than the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and GWM Haval H6.
Mazda has updated the CX-5's Kodo design language in accordance with the 'Wearable Gear' concept. At the front, the seven-point grille features a black frame connected to larger headlamps with tiered beams and daytime running lights. The lower apron incorporates faux corner air inlets and a larger central intake.
Along the sides, the roofline is longer and less sloping, while the doors open wider to facilitate access for rear passengers. At the rear, the L-shaped taillights, similar in design to those on the CX-60 and CX-80, extend into the tailgate and meet a Mazda script. The rear apron features a sculpted black section and dual tailpipes.
Interior and equipment
The third-generation CX-5 has a redesigned interior with fewer physical controls. The Commander control knob has been removed, along with the buttons and dials for operating the climate control system.
Almost all vehicle functions are integrated into the touchscreen infotainment system mounted on the dashboard. The Malaysian-market model has a 12.9-inch display, compared with the 15.6-inch unit available in other markets. The infotainment system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and is connected to a 12-speaker Bose sound system.
A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is positioned ahead of the three-spoke steering wheel. Other interior features include dual-zone air conditioning with rear air vents, powered and ventilated front seats with a memory function for the driver's seat, a 40:20:40 split-folding rear bench seat, tan sport leather upholstery, a head-up display, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a wireless Qi charger and ambient lighting.
Other equipment includes LED exterior lighting, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and engine start, an optional panoramic sunroof with powered sliding and tilting functions, 19-inch black metallic alloy wheels, a powered tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, and roof rails.
Powertrain and transmission
Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia receive the new CX-5 with the non-electrified Skyactiv-G 2.5 engine, while Japan and the Philippines offer the model with a mild-hybrid powertrain.
The 2.5-litre naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder petrol engine produces 187 PS at 6,000 rpm and 257 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. These figures are lower than those of the previous-generation KF 2.5G 2WD High, which produces 195 PS and 258 Nm of torque.
Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission. The transmission does not have paddle shifters, so manual gear selection must be carried out using the gear lever. The powertrain enables a top speed of 187 km/h and incorporates a brake-by-wire system and Mazda's G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus).
Warranty
As with most Mazda models sold in Malaysia, excluding the BT-50, the new CX-5 comes with a five-year/100,000-km manufacturer's warranty and a free servicing package covering parts, lubricants and labour.
