Beijing Automobile Works (BAW) officially entered the Indonesian market at the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), introducing a five-model right-hand-drive line-up and announcing its expansion into Southeast Asia's market for electric and light commercial vehicles.
The company also announced the establishment of a local subsidiary, BAW Automobile Trading Indonesia, along with plans for a knock-down (KD) assembly project to accelerate localisation and improve supply chain efficiency.
"Indonesia is a key market for BAW and an important gateway to Southeast Asia's right-hand-drive automotive industry. With 75 years of experience, we are confident in launching five new models debuting at GIIAS 2026, reflecting our long-term commitment to Indonesian customers. Through BAW Automobile Indonesia, our planned local knock-down (KD) assembly project, and the development of a comprehensive sales and after-sales network, we aim to provide reliable, smart, and accessible mobility solutions while supporting Indonesia's automotive industry," said Tocy Tang, President Director of BAW Automobile Trading Indonesia.
Indonesia is a geographically diverse market where right-hand-drive vehicles are standard, with demand driven by urban centres, suburban commuters, and island logistics. Policy measures introduced in recent years to strengthen the local vehicle and parts supply chain have made the market more accessible to foreign manufacturers.
BAW's entry could increase competition in both the new-energy passenger vehicle market and the electric commercial vehicle segment. Founded in 1951, BAW has more than 75 years of experience in automotive manufacturing. The company states that it follows military-grade engineering standards across its product range. BAW currently operates five manufacturing plants and offers a portfolio that includes off-road vehicles, MPVs, new-energy passenger vehicles, new-energy commercial vehicles, and special-purpose vehicles.
To address Indonesia's passenger and commercial vehicle requirements and expand its right-hand-drive line-up in Southeast Asia, BAW introduced five models at the event, covering passenger transport, off-road driving, urban mobility, and logistics.
The M8, BAW's all-electric MPV, is designed for executive and family transport. According to the company, it combines interior space with an electric powertrain as part of its new-energy vehicle portfolio.
The T01 is an off-road vehicle designed for challenging terrain and outdoor use. It features a body-on-frame construction and five-link solid axles at both the front and rear. The X03 is an SUV intended for a range of driving conditions, combining technology features, everyday practicality, and off-road capability. According to the company, it is designed for both urban and outdoor use.
The D5 is a new-energy vehicle aimed at urban drivers. According to the company, its compact dimensions, ease of operation, and zero-emission powertrain are intended to support daily commuting.
The T10 Pro is a new-energy light truck designed for small businesses, courier services, mobile vendors, and freight operators. According to the company, it offers low operating costs, zero-emission mobility, and a design intended for logistics applications.
Following its debut at GIIAS, BAW plans to continue its localisation programme by developing a local KD assembly project to increase manufacturing capacity and improve supply chain efficiency. Alongside localised sales, operations, and after-sales services, the company said these initiatives are intended to establish an integrated business ecosystem to support customers in Indonesia.
BAW plans to expand into other Southeast Asian and right-hand-drive markets following its entry into Indonesia.
