BYD Cars Philippines has formally joined the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID), marking a development in the Philippine automotive industry in 2026.
The move was announced during the recently revived AVID Summit, which returned after several years following the pandemic. BYD's entry reflects changes in the Philippine automotive market, where electrified vehicles are accounting for a larger share of new vehicle offerings alongside traditional internal-combustion models.
Representing BYD at the summit were BYD Cars Philippines Managing Director Bob Palanca and Denza Philippines Country Head Adam Hu. Industry sources also indicated that Palanca has assumed the role of AVID vice president, placing a representative of a new-energy vehicle brand in a leadership position within the organisation.
In recent years, Chinese automotive brands have expanded their presence in the Philippine market. BYD, supported by ACMobility's charging network and dealership footprint, has increased its sales volumes and broadened its market presence beyond the electric vehicle segment.
For AVID, the addition of BYD comes at a time when regulators, manufacturers, distributors and consumers are addressing issues related to electrification, charging infrastructure, artificial intelligence and software-defined vehicles. AVID President Maria Fe Agudo said the organisation's mission remains focused on preparing the industry for cleaner, smarter and more technology-driven mobility solutions.
BYD's membership also reflects the competitive nature of the Philippine automotive industry. Traditional market leaders compete with established Japanese, Korean, European and American brands, as well as Chinese manufacturers that have expanded their presence through technology, pricing strategies and product development.
The development reflects changes in discussions surrounding electrification. Industry conversations have shifted from assessing consumer readiness for electric vehicles to examining how manufacturers, dealers, infrastructure providers and regulators are responding to changing market demand.
BYD's expansion has been supported by a broader product portfolio, a growing dealership network and initiatives related to electric mobility. The company's investments indicate its intention to maintain operations and expand its presence in the Philippine market.
As AVID continues its post-pandemic activities, BYD's membership reflects broader changes across the Philippine automotive sector, where electrification, software, connectivity and emerging global manufacturers are becoming increasingly significant factors. For established automotive brands, these developments reflect changes in the competitive landscape of the industry.
