EVs to be subject to registration fees from March 1st
Autobikes.vn, 4 Feb '25
Starting March 1st, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Vietnam will be subject to a registration fee equal to 50% of the fee for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles of the same seating capacity.
According to Decree No. 10/2022, for the first three years since its enactment (March 1st, 2022), BEVs have enjoyed a 0% initial registration fee. However, for the next two years (March 1st, 2025 - March 1st, 2027), the fee will be 50% of the rate applied to petrol and diesel cars of the same category.
This policy applies to both locally assembled and imported EVs and will remain in effect for a total of five years. Based on current registration fee rates for ICE vehicles across different provinces in Vietnam, the new EV registration fees will range from 5 - 6%, depending on the locality.
The standard ICE vehicle registration fee in Vietnam is 10%, as per Decree No. 10/2022/NĐ-CP issued by the Vietnamese Government. However, each province or city can adjust the rate according to its economic conditions.
With only one month left before the registration fee exemption ends, prospective EV buyers are urged to make their purchases in February 2025 to avoid additional costs.
How much more will EV buyers pay?
With the new registration fee, buyers of passenger EVs (9 seats or fewer) will need to pay an extra VND 10 million-900 million (US$ 395-35,580), depending on the vehicle's price.
Customers looking to buy electric cars should consider finalizing their purchases before March 1, 2025, to take advantage of the 0% registration fee while it's still in effect.
