Honda reveals CBR650R E-Clutch variant for launch in India
Autocar India, 8 May '25
Honda BigWing India has released a silhouette teaser of the CBR650R on social media, accompanied by the slogan "Power, precision and more to come".
As the motorcycle was introduced in India earlier this year, the teaser likely indicates the forthcoming addition of Honda's E-Clutch system, already available in other markets.
Honda E-Clutch system
The globally debuted E-Clutch system adds approximately 2 kg, increasing the CBR650R's kerb weight to around 211 kg.
It enables gear changes without the use of the clutch lever, while retaining full manual control. Drawing on elements of Honda's quick shifter and Dual Clutch Transmission technology, the E-Clutch integrates with a standard gearbox and clutch assembly.
Two actuators and multiple sensors manage clutch engagement electronically, permitting clutch less shifts and preventing stalling in stop-start traffic.
Operation and features
Riders may shift gears up or down using only the gear pedal, without engaging the clutch lever. The system automatically operates the clutch during starts and stops, facilitating urban riding. The manual clutch lever remains fully operational at all times.
Customisation settings for shift resistance - Soft, Medium or Hard - are available for both upshifts and downshifts. Additionally, a downshift prompt alerts the rider when the selected gear is unsuitable for the current speed, providing assistance without impeding control.
CBR650R E-Clutch variant
The powertrain remains the 649 cc in-line four-cylinder engine, producing 96 PS and 63 Nm of torque.
Exterior styling and design are unchanged, except for "E-Clutch" branding on the engine cover and a slightly protruding clutch case.
It has yet to be confirmed whether the E-Clutch system will extend to the CB650R model or remain exclusive to the CBR650R.
A launch date has not been announced, but Honda's teaser indicates that the CBR650R E-Clutch variant will arrive in Indian showrooms in the near future.
A modest price increase over the current CBR650R, which is priced at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), may be expected.
