Mitsubishi prioritises ICE models despite Indonesian government's EV push
Jakarta Globe, 11 Feb '26
Despite Indonesia's push to accelerate vehicle electrification and growing consumer interest in electric cars, Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors has stated that it will continue to prioritise fossil-fuel vehicles in the domestic market.
Atsushi Kurita, President Director of Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia, said on 10th February that demand for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles remains strong in Indonesia, making conventional models the company's primary focus.
"In Indonesia, we are still concentrating on ICE because demand remains very high and we already have vehicles known for their durability. So ICE continues to be our primary focus," Kurita was quoted as saying.
Kurita noted that, globally, Mitsubishi offers electric and hybrid models in several countries. However, in Indonesia, electrification will be introduced gradually, beginning with hybrids, which the company considers more aligned with current market conditions and consumer readiness.
"We plan to introduce hybrid cars this year for the Indonesian market, but we will continue to pursue a multi-pathway strategy," Kurita said.
This approach allows Mitsubishi to deploy different powertrain technologies according to local requirements, while allowing consumers time to adapt before a full transition to electric vehicles.
Mitsubishi has already launched hybrid models in Thailand but has not yet disclosed which hybrid vehicles will be introduced in Indonesia.
Toyota Astra Motor is also prioritising hybrids before making a full transition to electric vehicles.
Jap Ernando Demily, Marketing Director of Toyota Astra Motor, said the company's hybrid line-up across multiple segments is intended to provide mobility solutions that match "the preferences of Indonesian consumers."
During the Indonesia International Motor Show, Toyota displayed its Veloz plug-in hybrid, priced from IDR 303 million (US$ 18,000) through June 2026, including promotional discounts. The company also introduced a plug-in hybrid variant of its premium family MPV, the Alphard.
