Toyota is set to discontinue the Vios in Taiwan, with distributor Hotai Motor confirming that the current model has entered its phase-out period.

While earlier information from dealerships suggested that the final production run would be completed in September 2026, Hotai Motor has now confirmed that production is expected to continue until the end of 2026.

After production ends, the Vios will continue to be sold using vehicles held in local dealer inventory. The actual date on which sales will end across Taiwan has not yet been announced, meaning that the Vios remains available for purchase for the time being.

The Vios has been locally produced in Taiwan for approximately 23 years, and its discontinuation follows the discontinuation of the Yaris. Its withdrawal will further reduce the number of domestically produced sedans available to Taiwanese consumers.

Vios discontinuation schedule

- Early September 2026: According to initial information from dealerships, final production was expected to be completed in September.
- September 14th, 2026: Hotai Motor confirmed that the Vios will be discontinued, while production is now expected to continue until the end of the year. This is the latest confirmed update.
- End of 2026: Production is expected to end.
- After 2027 / Follow-up: Sales are expected to continue based on inventory held by local distributors. The actual date on which sales will be suspended remains undetermined.

The expected end-2026 production period does not mean that the Vios will officially be removed from the market at the end of 2026. Once production ceases, dealers in different regions may continue selling vehicles from their existing quotas and inventory. The time required to sell the remaining vehicles will depend on factors including the region, model, colour and stock levels.

Until Hotai Motor announces the final order date or Toyota Taiwan's official website removes the Vios from sale, a unified nationwide discontinuation date cannot be assumed.

Vios remains available for purchase

The Toyota Taiwan website continues to list the Vios, with the Classic and Luxury versions priced at NTD 609,000 and NTD 675,000 (US$ 19,145-21,220), respectively. Test-drive appointments also remain available.

However, availability may differ between authorised dealerships. The colour, model year, number of vehicles in stock and delivery dates can vary by showroom. Therefore, the continued listing of the Vios on Toyota Taiwan's website does not mean that every dealership has identical vehicles available for immediate delivery.

The Vios starts at NTD 609,000 and qualifies for the NTD 50,000 commodity-tax reduction available for new passenger cars equipped with engines below 2.0 litres. Once clearance discounts are taken into account, dealers suggest that buyers could potentially purchase remaining Vios inventory for less than NTD 500,000.

Both variants use Toyota's 1,496cc 2NR-FE inline four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing maximum power of 107PS at 6,000rpm and peak torque of 14.3kg-m at 4,200rpm. The engine is paired with a Super CVT-i continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive.

Official average fuel consumption is rated at 17.3km/ litre for both versions. The Vios measures 4,425mm in length, has a 2,550mm wheelbase and offers 473 litres of luggage compartment capacity. The Classic retains the NTD 609,000 starting price and comes with seven SRS airbags, but does not feature Toyota Safety Sense. The Luxury costs NTD 675,000, representing a NTD 66,000 premium over the Classic, and adds Toyota Safety Sense, cruise control, intelligent automatic climate control, Smart Entry and Push Start.

For buyers who frequently drive on motorways or place greater importance on active safety features, the Luxury version provides additional equipment, subject to vehicle availability.

Vios production history and market position

The Vios has been positioned as an affordable commuter sedan for Taiwanese consumers.

Its discontinuation follows Toyota's earlier decision to discontinue the Yaris, leaving fewer locally produced options for buyers seeking relatively affordable passenger cars. The Vios' discontinuation also coincides with a reduction in the number of affordable sedan models produced domestically in Taiwan. Following the end of Ford Focus production in 2026 as part of Ford's global product strategy, five domestically produced sedans had remained: the Altis, Vios, Honda Fit, Nissan Sentra and Mitsubishi Colt Plus. With the Vios now also set to leave the market, consumers will have fewer domestically produced sedan options.

The fourth-generation Vios has already been introduced in overseas markets, but dealers say they have not received information about a successor being introduced in Taiwan.

Will the next-generation Vios be introduced in Taiwan?

There is currently no official information confirming that Toyota will introduce the next-generation Vios in Taiwan. Toyota already offers a new generation of compact sedan products in some Southeast Asian markets.

However, the overseas model's name, platform, powertrain and features cannot be directly treated as those of a Taiwanese successor. The existence of these overseas models also does not establish that Toyota Taiwan will localise them, nor does it provide a basis for predicting a launch date or price in Taiwan.

If Toyota Taiwan decides to fill the product gap created by the Vios' discontinuation, the specific replacement model, production location and powertrain have yet to be announced. Consumers considering purchasing a Vios should therefore base their decision on the specifications currently listed on Toyota Taiwan's website and the availability of vehicles at authorised dealerships, rather than assuming that an overseas Vios successor will be introduced in Taiwan.

The current Vios is consequently expected to remain on sale until available inventory is exhausted after production ends. The timing will vary according to dealer stock, model, colour and region, with no unified nationwide sales-end date confirmed so far.
