VinFast partners with CATL, Gotion for battery recycling

VinFast is collaborating with Chinese battery manufacturers CATL and Gotion to manage battery waste in Indonesia.
The initiative forms part of the development of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem alongside the operation of VinFast's factory in Subang, West Java.
Rinaldi Ramdani, Head of the Training Department at VinFast Indonesia, said the company does not yet have the capability to manage its own battery recycling operations. As a result, VinFast has chosen to work with partners that have experience in electric vehicle battery management.
''For battery recycling, we collaborate with several vendors, such as Gotion and CATL. These strategic partners will help us manage battery waste,'' Rinaldi told reporters on July 7th.
According to Rinaldi, the entire battery waste management process will be conducted in Indonesia. Used batteries from VinFast vehicles will therefore not be exported for processing.
However, VinFast has not ruled out developing its own battery recycling capabilities in the future. The company said such a move would be considered once it has gained sufficient experience and operational readiness in the sector.
''In the future, it is possible that we'll manage it ourselves. However, we're still studying the battery recycling process and patterns. We don't want to rush into the process without sufficient experience,'' he said.
VinFast said its collaboration with CATL and Gotion is expected to support the development of the national EV ecosystem, particularly in battery waste management, which is an important component of the industry supply chain.
The development of battery recycling and waste management systems is considered a key aspect of the EV industry due to its role in supporting environmental sustainability.
As the number of electric vehicles on the road continues to grow, demand for battery recycling facilities is also expected to increase.
As part of its expansion plans in Indonesia, VinFast has invested more than US$ 300 million in a production facility in Subang, West Java, with an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 units.
Over the medium term, the company aims to invest a total of US$ 1 billion and increase production capacity to 350,000 units per year to serve both domestic and export markets.
