When BYD Cars Philippines launched the Seal 5 DM-i in 2024, it was positioned as an affordable, equipped, and fuel-efficient sedan.
With a starting price of PHP 948,000 (US$ 16,310) and the ability to operate on electric power over limited distances, the Seal 5 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid midsize sedan at B-segment pricing.
The manufacturer has unveiled an updated version of the plug-in hybrid sedan, the Seal 05 DM-i. Despite a slightly revised name, the company stated that it represents a revised iteration of the electrified four-door model.
The 2026 Seal 05 DM-i is currently available in China, with the timeline for its introduction to the Philippine market yet to be announced.
In terms of design, the 2026 Seal 05 DM-i has a modified exterior. The front incorporates a semi-closed grille, functional lower air intakes, and side vents.
The redesigned LED headlights resemble those of the Sealion 6 DM-i, and the updated LED taillights have a revised design. New alloy wheel designs have been introduced for select variants. The sedan retains its previous dimensions, measuring 4,780 mm in length, 1,837 mm in width, 1,515 mm in height, and featuring a 2,718 mm wheelbase.
Inside, the Seal 05 DM-i has a minimalist cabin layout. The centre console has been redesigned, and a flat-bottom steering wheel is positioned ahead of the driver.
It continues to feature an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The gear selector has been replaced with an electronic column shifter, creating additional cabin space for the driver and front passenger.
The Seal 05 DM-i is powered by a plug-in hybrid system, which pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine with a front-mounted electric motor supplied by a 15.87 kWh Blade Battery. The engine produces 100 PS and 126 Nm of torque, while the electric motor produces 163 PS and 210 Nm.
On a full charge, the 15.87 kWh battery provides a pure electric driving range of up to 128 km under the CLTC cycle.
With a full tank of fuel, the combined system range reaches up to 2,000 km. Compared with the previous Seal 5 DM-i, the updated version offers an extended range but slightly reduced torque from the electric motor.
