EV charging, battery swapping investments surge on rising fuel prices

Rising fuel prices and increasing demand for electric vehicles are contributing to higher levels of investment in charging stations and battery-swapping systems.
Vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure providers, and property owners are expanding charging and swapping networks. In the electric two-wheeler segment, battery swapping is gaining traction. Unlike conventional charging, this model enables users to replace batteries within minutes, reducing waiting time and improving operational convenience.
Focus on convenience for electric two-wheeler users
Among major investors, VinFast is operating at a large scale. The company offers three electric two-wheeler models that support battery swapping: Evo, Feliz II and Viper. Customers can either purchase a vehicle with a battery or opt for a subscription priced at VND 175,000 (US$ 6.65) per month for a single-battery plan and VND 300,000 per month for a two-battery plan. Each battery swap costs VND 9,000.
Alongside vehicle sales, the swapping infrastructure developed by V-Green is expanding. The network is planned to reach 45,000 battery-swapping cabinets across 34 provinces and cities by Q1 2026. By mid-January 2026, approximately 4,500 stations had been completed nationwide.
This expansion indicates that infrastructure is increasingly being considered a relevant factor in customer retention strategies by manufacturers.
Meanwhile, Selex Motors, which focuses on high-usage segments such as delivery, logistics, and urban services, is operating around 118 swapping stations in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hue, with a target of 1,000 stations by 2026. The company is also partnering with Petrolimex to integrate swapping cabinets into petrol stations, aiming to develop shared infrastructure for multiple vehicle types.
Japanese manufacturers are also increasing activity in this segment. Honda has introduced the Icon e: and plans to roll out its e: Swap Battery Station network starting in April 2026. By June 2026, additional charging stations at dealerships, equipped with 1,200W chargers, are expected to be introduced.
Similarly, Yamaha has announced plans to develop a battery-swapping network, initially to be piloted in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City through its Yamaha Town network and partner ZuttoRide Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, the development of EV charging infrastructure is also progressing.
Increase in demand for charging installation
Infrastructure providers have reported increased demand as fuel prices rise. According to An Dinh Nha, Chief Executive Officer of An Gia Green Energy, requests for charging station installations have increased fivefold, requiring collaboration with partners to meet deadlines.
A representative from Fast+ JSC stated that staffing levels have been increased and operating hours extended to manage installation demand. Huynh Tien Dat, Chief Executive Officer of EV One Charging Equipment and Solutions JSC, noted that stricter environmental standards in major cities are expected to support the transition to electric mobility and associated infrastructure development.
Gogoro has confirmed its entry into Ho Chi Minh City this year, with pilot operations expected from Q2 2026. The company operates approximately 1.4 million smart batteries and more than 2,700 GoStations, serving over 650,000 users and facilitating around 370,000 battery swaps per day.
Beyond major automakers, other businesses are also entering the market. TNG Investment and Trading JSC has proposed the addition of solar energy and EV charging stations to its business portfolio at its 2026 annual general meeting.
These developments indicate that EV infrastructure is expanding beyond vehicle manufacturers and is attracting a wider range of participants.
