JLR to reintroduce Jaguar in early 2027

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will reintroduce Jaguar to the Indian market in the second half of 2027, as the brand transitions to an exclusively electric line-up.
The company will also launch the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric early next year, Managing Director Rajan Amba said recently. The planned reintroduction of Jaguar forms part of JLR's strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in India. The company is increasing its focus on flagship vehicles with higher profit margins while reducing its emphasis on entry-level products. Its average transaction price is approximately Rs. 14 million (US$ 148,160).
The Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport accounted for more than 80% of JLR's sales, a higher proportion than that recorded by most premium competitors. Although the company's retail sales declined by 2% in FY26, its revenue increased by approximately 14%.
Amba said the company did not anticipate any major obstacles to its electric vehicle rollout. "I don't think that there are any roadblocks as such," he said, although he added that pricing would not receive immediate relief.
The India-UK trade agreement, which came into force on July 15th, reduces import duties on eligible British-built petrol and diesel cars from as high as 110%. However, electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles will not receive concessions during the first five years. "From a pricing perspective, we don't expect the benefit to flow for another 5 years," he further added.
Amba discussed changes in consumer spending patterns at the launch of a new retail outlet in Mumbai recently. According to the executive, buyers are increasingly prioritising purchases that fulfil their aspirations over saving money.
"People are wanting to fulfil their aspirations more and more as opposed to keeping money in the bank. The time frames are getting shorter and shorter between dreaming and planning to actually going out and just get it," he said.
He described the experience of a customer from Maharashtra who earned Rs. 50,000 a month through customs clearing or trading before Covid and subsequently established a trading business.
The customer purchased a premium or luxury car every year for seven years, with his son selecting each vehicle. "India is full of customers who will just surprise you," Amba said.
He also recounted an instance in which a customer arrived at a dealership intending to purchase a Range Rover Sport but subsequently took delivery of a Range Rover after dealership staff recommended the latter.
Alongside Jaguar's reintroduction, JLR plans to offer mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions across future Range Rover, Defender and Discovery models. The company also plans to invest GBP 18 billion (US$ 24 billion) globally through FY29 in technologies, platforms and business transformation.
