Mandatory scrapping of old Chinese vehicles into effect in May
Gasgoo, 16 Jan '13

The Ministry of Commerce, National Development and Reform Committee, Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Environmental Protection jointly announced new provisions for the mandatory scrapping of automobiles in China earlier this week, a local daily reported on 15th January.

According to the new legislation, which will come into effect on May 1, there will no longer be limits on how old private automobiles are before being scrapped.

According to the provisions, registered personal use automobiles will be allowed to be operated for 60,000 km before being scrapped. Prior to these new provisions, these vehicles would have to be removed from the road after reaching a certain age. Meanwhile, small taxis, midsize taxis and buses will need to be removed from service and dismantled eight years, ten years and 13 years after their production dates, respectively.

Owners of vehicles whose vehicles have reached the age limits outlined in the provisions are required to sell their vehicles to certified demolition companies. Any certifications associated with the vehicle will be revoked by the relevant departments in the Ministry of Public Security.
