Kia Motors Lanka has unveiled two new models - the Sorento Hybrid and the EV5 - at a preview event held in Colombo.
This dual introduction is among Kia's most notable entries into the local market since the lifting of Sri Lanka's import restrictions on motor vehicles.
It comes at a time when the automotive industry is transitioning towards electrification. Kia Motors stated that the introduction of these two models reflects the brand's continued focus on combining established product lines with new technologies.
Kia Motors Lanka Chairman Mahen Thambiah said, "Today's unveiling symbolises the bridging of two worlds - the trusted Kia legacy that Sri Lankans know and appreciate, and the bold, electrified future that defines our global direction. The Sorento Hybrid continues the story of an icon, while the EV5 opens a new chapter in Kia's journey towards full electrification."
He stated that, in addition to the internal combustion engine (ICE) models currently available in the market, Kia will introduce three new Hybrid models alongside the Sportage, Sorento, and Carnival already offered. In 2026, three new electric models will also be launched to join the EV9, EV6, and EV5 currently available.
The Kia Sorento, a long-standing model in Sri Lanka's premium 'D' segment, has maintained a position as a mid-size SUV competing with European and Japanese brands. The fifth-generation 2026 Sorento Hybrid (HEV) features updated design elements, hybrid technology, and a revised interior layout.
The exterior includes vertically oriented tail lamps, rear contours, and black cladding with a skid plate. The interior provides seating for up to seven occupants, featuring a minimalist layout with horizontal lines and surfaces designed for usability.
The cabin is equipped with a 12.3-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, along with a 12-speaker Bose sound system.
Other features include the driver's Integrated Memory System, Smart Power Tailgate, and configurable seating arrangements.
The Sorento Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain, available with either 2WD or AWD configurations. The suspension system incorporates new bushings and frequency-sensitive dampers aimed at improving ride comfort and control.
It is equipped with a range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Smart Cruise Control, Surround View Monitor, and Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist. Launched alongside the Sorento, the Kia EV5 is the company's first electric vehicle introduction in Sri Lanka.
The EV5 is a compact electric SUV based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). It incorporates design influences from the EV6 and EV9 and includes Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy.
The standard version features a 64 kWh battery and a 160 kW motor, offering a range of up to 400 km per charge (CLTC standard), while the long-range version extends this to 555 km.
It also includes a heat pump system for battery temperature management, regenerative braking, and an i-Pedal function for single-pedal driving.
On the inside, it features recycled PET fabrics, Bio-PU leather, three-zone climate control, and Panoramic Wide Display technology integrating dual 12.3-inch screens with a 5-inch climate display. Kia's Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system provides real-time connectivity and over-the-air software updates, while the Kia Connect Store enables feature upgrades.
The EV5 includes seven airbags, a reinforced structure, and Kia's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
Thambiah stated, "The EV5 is not merely an addition to Kia's global electric line-up. It represents our vision for the future of mobility - efficient, connected, and emotionally engaging. The arrival of the EV5 in Sri Lanka signifies that the electric future has truly begun."
