Indonesia's efforts to expand its electric vehicle industry continue with the ongoing construction of BYD's manufacturing facility in the country.
The construction of BYD's factory in Indonesia is progressing, with the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer confirming that operations are expected to begin by early 2026.
According to Luther T. Panjaitan, Head of Marketing Communications at BYD Motor Indonesia, more than 75% of the construction has been completed. The Government, through the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), has conducted an audit to review the project's progress.
"As of today, progress is proceeding smoothly and remains in line with Government expectations. It is important to note that reporting and progress updates are part of our responsibility to the Government," Luther stated during a meeting in South Jakarta on October 27th, 2025.
He added that the most recent audit by the BKPM took place approximately two months ago and confirmed that the factory had reached 75% completion, indicating that the current figure may now be higher.
"Last month, the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) visited to audit our manufacturing progress. At that time, 75% of the work had been approved, and the percentage is probably higher now, as that was two months ago," he continued.
Luther stated that BYD's target remains unchanged, with the company aiming to complete construction by the end of this year. Once completed, the facility will support BYD's domestic electric vehicle production.
"The target aligns with our commitment to finish by the end of the year. In line with our business objectives, when we are expected to begin production, we must deliver, as maintaining customer trust is crucial," Luther explained.
According to the official website of the West Java Provincial Government Liaison Agency, the construction of BYD's factory in the Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Area, West Java, will provide employment for approximately 18,000 workers.
The facility will occupy over 108 hectares, making it the largest automotive manufacturing site in Indonesia. BYD's investment in the country is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to local economic activity. The factory's operations in Subang are also expected to support technology transfer and the development of expertise in electric vehicle manufacturing.
