A local distributor of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands has identified significant growth potential for EVs in the Philippines, driven by the country's expanding population and increasing consumer interest in sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
The rising demand for electric and hybrid vehicles presents considerable opportunities in Cebu and the broader Philippine market. The distributor's partnership with Omoda and Jaecoo aims to introduce environmentally friendly vehicles to Filipino consumers.
Eres Automotive recently launched the Omoda and Jaecoo brands in Cebu, opening the first local dealership at Gaisano Mall in the North Reclamation Area, Cebu City, on 18th December 2024. This is the first dealership for these brands in the Philippines.
Omoda and Jaecoo are part of Chery's vehicle portfolio and offer electric and hybrid vehicles designed to combine performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental sustainability, with attention to style, comfort, and safety.
Terry Hu, Country Director of Omoda and Jaecoo Motor Philippines, highlighted Cebu's strategic importance as a business hub.
He noted, "Cebu City serves as a gateway to the growing Visayan market. Cebu is centrally located and connects various islands and communities. We are confident that Cebu will be a successful location for our first dealership."
According to Carlo Joseph Japson, CEO of Eres Automotive, increasing awareness of climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are driving consumers toward more sustainable transportation options.
The volatility of global oil prices has also made traditional fuel costs less predictable, increasing the appeal of EVs due to their lower operating and energy costs.
Eres Automotive has introduced the Omoda C5 to the local market, featuring advanced technologies such as a Smart Key with Remote Engine Start and a Voice Control Command System. The vehicle is available in three variants, all priced under PHP 1.3 million (US$ 22,200).
The Omoda E5, the brand's first fully electric vehicle, offers a WLTP-rated range of 430 km and fast-charging capabilities, allowing it to recharge from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes. The E5 is available in two variants, with the Comfort variant including a complimentary 7kW wall charger. Both variants are priced under PHP 1.7 million.
The Jaecoo EJ6 is an electric SUV available in RWD and AWD versions, offering a range of up to 421 km. It features fast charging and a technology-rich cabin with adaptive cruise control, wireless charging, and smartphone integration. The vehicle also includes safety features such as multiple airbags, ABS, and blind-spot monitoring, designed for various terrains.
In addition to the Cebu showroom, Eres Automotive plans to expand to Leyte and is exploring partnerships to establish EV charging stations across the Visayas.
Omoda and Jaecoo Philippines also plan to open additional dealerships in key locations nationwide by the first quarter of 2025.
